Artist Statement:
"The Sunset Series" is a collection of 6 original, canvas paintings that are a reflection on the daily setting of the sun and the vastness of the sky. The encouragement in this collection is to take a moment at the end of each day to
acknowledge your smallness and the endless creativity of our Creator. We experience the sky each day of our existence and that shouldn't make it any less extraordinary.
With each piece that she creates, Katie seeks to tell celebration stories; particularly ones that relate to memories and nostalgia. All works are guided in bright blends of color but are underpinned by seemingly chaotic mark making or imperfect, classic shapes. However, when depicting these memories, they are “repainted” in a way that allows the viewer to interpret the experience in a way that restores them. Often our negative memories are remembered as such because we end the story at a negative point – we stop the story. Therefore Katie's work seeks to extend the story so that the experience can be remembered at a different point in the same narrative; thus reshaping the past, by mentally filing the experience differently.
Artist Bio:
Katie M. W. Schermbeck was born in 1991 in Raleigh, North Carolina and now lives & works in Wendell, NC as a visual artist. Her work is primarily comprised of abstract, acrylic paintings on canvas that have been exhibited in local galleries and private collections from New York City to San Francisco, France to Canada, and beyond. Her work has been featured in print, product reproduction, and physical spaces, most notably Makers Movement Magazine, All Good Things Collective, and Milton Rhodes Art Center, respectively. In 2012, Schermbeck graduated from Appalachian State University with a BS in Non-Profit Communication and joined Teach For America to teach in a high-needs classroom. Since then, she has been a practicing artist while simultaneously holding multiple roles working toward achieving educational equity.
